Unable to start up on a MSI-VR630 laptop

    hi,

After much problems i managed to install ubuntu with a alternate install cd on a MSI-VR630 http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=...d_no=1650#menu .
now after installation i can't start up ubuntu i've tried different options for vga and noapic but no luck .
When i trie to start the screen turns black after loading the networkcard(networkcard loads OK) and the computer locks up no hd act.

i tried other distro's but no luck debian, fedora, mandriva.
I need it to run ubuntu cos it's a portable for a linux novice and i think ubuntu is the best distro at the moment.

the only distro that runs wihtout a problem is elive(debian based) i can access the files and folders of my installed ubuntu 8.10 distro.

can sombody help me with getting ubuntu 8.10 running?

    thanks

Wink Re: Unable to start up on a MSI-VR630 laptop

So nice to hear it. I say it because I also have an MSI VR630 notebook. I've bought it today, I a was very disappointed when I didn't manage to run any linux OS on it. I tryed OpenSuse, Mandriva 2008 Live, Ubuntu 8.10 and 7.10 with no success. I also managed to install Ubuntu 8.10 with an alternate cd, but it didn't start. It simply turns black, and the computer becames silent.
It stops at seeing hardware drivers.

I've tried it with special start modes (Ubuntu Live CD 8.10). I am a beginner, so I simply turned everything off. There was something different with ACPI turned off. A prompt appeared, but I couldn't do anything there (as I said, I am a beginner).

There is a seting in BIOS/Advanced menu called AHCI DID for Linux. I do not know what does it mean. It has some connection with SATA. When I had set it to Enable nothing has changed, but Windows XP wasn't able to boot. Maybe it is not importaint, I just want to give some tips without the needed technical becground (from my side).

I really hope, we will find some solution to the problem. I don't want to use Windows or Vista. It froze down several times on the first day.

    Hi!

I got this type of notebook yesterday. I'm now downloading the elive 1.9.20. Was this the distro which run without problems?

I suspect a difference in the kernels (between ubuntu and elive)...

I have found lots of topics on the ubuntu forums with

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/222176

    +etc...

    Hello

    I'm french...

I bought this laptop with ubuntu pre-installed.

I think it runs only in 64 bits. I've intrepid on it. I've only 3 littles bugs :
    1. front mic doesn't work (near webcam)
    2. when i plug headset, sound isn't mute on speakers
    3. videos of youtube "saccade" (are very slow, stop and go...)

    And yours ?

    Hi!

That sounds good if the preinstalled ubuntu works, than it should be possible to run ubuntu on these laptops too.

Could You send the output of "uname -a" and "cat /etc/*-version"?!

    1) if I plug an external mic to the 2. jack than it works... the front mic for me is also problematic
    2) in alsamixer you can mute the speaker
    3) no problem on elive (I'm currently using elive development version), the nvidia driver is loaded when X starts. You should check the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, if it shows the nvidia driver.... or grep -i nvidia /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

    ...

Indeed, that good news because it means it's possible. Now, if you have these problems, that imples you did manage to install it then? If you did, do you mind sharing with us how you did it?

    Ubuntu 64bit

    bios enable ahci
    AHCI DID for Linux enable

    boot from cd
    press F6
    delete quiet

    then add: nosplash init=/bin/bash

    You need ethernet connection

    then type

    Code:
    dhclient eth0
    Code:
    apt-get update
    Code:
    apt-get install nvidia-glx-177
    Code:
    depmod -a
    Code:
    nvidia-xconfig
    Code:
    /etc/init.d/dbus stop
    Code:
    /etc/init.d/dbus start
    Code:
    /etc/init.d/hal stop
    Code:
    /etc/init.d/hal start
    Code:
    gdm start
Maybe your touchpad will not working, You must install system with keyboard.

    Reboot
Then press (ESC) in the grub menu
    press e
    then edit ro to rw
    remove quiet
    add nosplash init=/bin/bash

    Code:
    dhclient eth0
    Code:
    apt-get update
    Code:
    apt-get install nvidia-glx-177
    Code:
    depmod -a
    Code:
